Atletico Madrid Drinkwater

My Season Highlight: Danny Drinkwater

Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater sat down with LCFC TV recently to discuss his highlight of the 2016/17 campaign.

Unsurprisingly, the England international pointed to the Club's maiden UEFA Champions League campaign, picking out the Quarter-Final away leg at Atlético Madrid as one match which stood out.

The Foxes ultimately lost that tie 1-0 owing to Antoine Griezmann's first half penalty but a battling second leg performance on Filbert Way very nearly allowed Drinkwater and Co. to play in the last four.

Drinkwater's highlight:

"I’ve definitely got to say the Champions League. The music and the way, at Atlético Madrid, the crowd was whistling, you could barely hear.

"You got a buzz feeling ‘this is a big game’ and that’s the feeling you look for. That’s what makes you take your performance to the next level.

The Leicester City side line up ahead of facing Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

"We went out to a very good Atlético side but we went out with our heads held high. We did ourselves proud.

"We never knew how important that experience would be but we’ll take it into seasons to come.

"It’ll make us better footballers, definitely."

Match round-up:

Leicester City’s hopes of advancing in the UEFA Champions League remained intact after they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Atlético Madrid at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

The Foxes were under pressure from the off as Kasper Schmeichel denied Fernando Torres at the front post with four minutes gone, before Koke hammered a 25-yard drive onto the upright just a minute later.

Craig Shakespeare’s men gained a foothold in the game following Atlético’s early dominance and were unfortunate not to have capitalised on a golden opportunity.

Marc Albrighton sent a fizzing cross into Shinji Okazaki, but the delivery was just behind the striker, who couldn’t convert. Frustratingly, City then fell behind just before the half-hour mark.

City's Quarter-Final clash at Atlético Madrid was one of the biggest night's in the Club's history.

The recovering Albrighton was deemed to have fouled Antoine Griezmann in the area and the France international dispatched the penalty to fire his side in front.

Opportunities to equalise followed after the break. Robert Huth saw a strike from close range blocked early on in the second period, while Riyad Mahrez curled the rebound over.

But there would be no breakthrough for City, who had to defend resolutely in the late stages to ensure Diego Simeone’s men would not extend their advantage.
